Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail
The Alps to Ocean Cycle Trail is an epic journey that traverses some of the country’s most stunning landscapes, stretching from the Southern Alps to the Pacific Ocean. Covering around 300 kilometers (186 miles), this trail offers a diverse and awe-inspiring experience for cyclists of varying skill levels. We are located on the route – actually one of the last accommodation options before getting to Oamaru! – which makes The Holy Oaks a convenient stop if you’re travelling the Alps to ocean route!
Elephant Rocks
Explore the geological wonder of Elephant R0cks, a 6 minute drive from Duntroon. The remains of an ancient seabed, these colossal limestone boulders scattered across an open and picturesque landscape provide a captivating environment for photographers and nature enthusiasts alike.
Vanished World
Journey back in time at the Vanished World in Duntroon, a captivating fossil treasure trove. The centre unveils an ancient landscape through a stunning collection of fossils including whales, dolphins and invertebrates from 20-30 million years ago and mostly collected within a 20km radius of Duntroon. This is a must visit for paleontology enthusiasts and curious minds.
The Flying Pig cafe
Not to be missed, this charming little cafe has a great reputation it truly deserves. Full of home baked goodies and a tasty breakfast and lunch menu, combined with friendly service, it is definitely worth a visit and just a short stroll from the Holy Oaks.
The Blacksmith Forge
The Blacksmith Forge in Duntroon is a captivating tribute to a bygone era of craftsmanship. Saved from demolition by local farmers in 1975 this is one of a very few authentic working blacksmiths restored to its original condition. Visitors can watch skilled artisans in action at work over summer weekends and, if inspired, you can even book a lesson to create your own metal masterpiece.
The Duntroon Wetlands
Developed by local volunteers over the past decade this is a wonderful walk to stretch your legs and reconnect with nature. Stroll along the boardwalks and soak up the beauty of the native flora and fauna with a view of magnificent mountain ranges in the distance.
